Team Verses: “Do you not know that in a race all runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it for a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it a slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” I Cor 9:24-27
Team Slogan: “One Team. One Battle. One Goal. Kingdom, Power, Glory.”
Meet the Coach - JOHN MITCHELL “Trainer John” can trace the beginning of his soccer roots all the way back to Linfield. At 6 years of age, his first ever soccer game was played on a grass field where the Lion’s home stadium now stands. Later, he would play for one of Linfield’s first undefeated middle school teams (beating teams like Arrowhead and Woodcrest). According to John, “It’s awesome being able to be a part of this continued history. I hope to coach and see this program carry on with similar success.” He spent time playing with Temecula Soccer Club and San Diego Pegasus (where his team won the U-19 State Cup Open Division). At Temecula Valley High School he was a 3 year varsity goalkeeper and senior captain. He’s in his 7th year of employment at Linfield as a faculty member and athletic trainer. Although John has coaching experience at the club, recreational, and high school levels, this year’s head coaching job will prove to be his toughest challenge yet…for soccer that is. John has been married to his high school sweetheart Jenny for 6 years. They were blessed on March 17th with the birth of their son “Jack”. Being a dad should prove to be a tough challenge as well, but hopefully a lot of fun.
Meet the Coach - IAN PEEBLES Coach Ian has athletic experience at both the high school and collegiate levels. In high school, he played football, soccer and ran track for Martin Luther King High, earning him recognition at the Riverside Sport Hall of Fame 2005. He was later recruited to run track for Wheaton College in Illinois. Ian’s soccer career began at the age of six. He would later go on to play for multiple traveling teams. At King High, Ian’s varsity team won three league championships (making it to CIF quarter finals once and CIF semis twice). When asked about coaching, Ian believes that, “Any sport you play is about more than the game. It is a time to develop character. I love the family aspect, the hard work, and the willpower sports develop in its participants.” Ian currently works as a youth pastor for a Korean church in Corona. Between soccer and youth group, he is also working on his master’s degree and acting as an in-house sub for Linfield. In the spring, Ian will join up and help coach Linfield’s track and field team.
A Message From The Coaches: Former Linfield Coach, Dave Brown said that soccer is just like life. “We train hard, try to perfect our skills and take the field with confidence. Sometimes we play a near perfect game, but the scoreboard says we lost. Other times we win when know we didn't earn it.” These words couldn’t be truer. The key to life and soccer, is to battle to the best of our abilities in all that we do. Yes, it’s fun to have the win posted on the scoreboard; it’s fun to be the winner. However, the real importance comes from how victory is achieved. We are called to be servants of Christ in all that we do. Playing soccer is no exception.
One Team – Kingdom We are exactly that; “One Team”. We play not for our personal glory, but for the glory of our God and our team. God calls us to bring glory to Him in all that we do. Through soccer and as “One Team” we will conduct ourselves in a manner that allows us to be living examples of God’s “Kingdom”.
One Battle – Power As we step onto the pitch each player enters a personal battle field. How will each player be an example of God’s Kingdom? Can each player stay mentally focused; do they battle relentlessly; do they play with respect for themselves, opponents, and the game? As individuals, we will fail miserably. As a team, taking all the individual battles, and fighting them together in “One Battle” we will be victorious and “Powerful”. This is a power that comes from and is founded upon God alone.
One Goal - Glory As a team, we have “One Goal”; bring God “Glory”. Regardless of score-line; if we battle as one team (as an example of God’s Kingdom) we will win our battle. With God on our side, how can we fail?
2010/2011 SEASON PREVIEW: This year’s season is a season of many firsts. Linfield is coming off of back-to-back Big Sky League championships for the 1st time in school history. However, this year, will be Linfield’s first year competing in the newly established Ambassador League. The league is a merger of the Big Sky and Christian Leagues, and the competition has only become stronger. Can Linfield win its third consecutive title and be the 1st league champions of Ambassador League? Linfield also has a new coaching staff. John Mitchell (former assistant coach), is captaining Linfield for the first time. Assistant coach Ian Peebles, takes on his role for the first time ever. If new coaches and a new league aren’t enough, Linfield has a lot of first-time high school soccer players. The success of the 2009/2010 season was accomplished with a 17 man squad. Of those 17, only 4 were seniors. With 13 returning players expected for the 2010/2011 season, Linfield had good reason to expect similar successes. Unfortunately, due to season ending injuries and other uncontrolled matters, Linfield is returning only 8 players (less than half their team from the previous season, not even enough to field a complete team). However, this year’s squad numbers in at 24…that’s twice as many new players as returning players. If the Lions are going to find any success in the 2010/2011 season, they’ll need to work hard and bond as a team quickly.
