Why Linfield?

A Beautiful Legacy

Why Linfield?

Because the school was founded in 1936 by Dr. Mabel Culter and is blessed with a rich history of excellence and a beautiful 100 acre property in Temecula, CA.

What sets us apart in terms of our campus and legacy? Here are just a few examples.

Living the Legacy

While an 87 year legacy is remarkable for any school in Southern California, it’s even more astounding for a private Christian school. For when Dr. Mabel Culter decided to open the front door of a borrowed living room and declare the grand opening of Culter Academy in 1936, it was, after all, the middle of the Great Depression. Most parents were struggling to put food on the table. The idea of starting a tuition-dependent Christian school in such a climate seemed impossible. One man famously told Mabel Culter that “only a fool…or a woman” would undertake anything like this. But fortunately, Mabel listened to God and followed the beautiful vision He had whispered into her heart. And through the years - through wars, recessions, cultural shifts, and technological advances - the Lord has been abundantly faithful in providing students, teachers, property, funding, and leadership. Culter Academy actually flourished in Los Angeles for 30 years before school leaders purchased a sprawling property of rolling hills and empty ranch fields in the middle of Temecula. The newly re-named Linfield School opened in 1973 and has remained here ever since. And though the world may have altered dramatically since 1936, the school’s spirit remains unchanged, and we are still fully devoted to the mission of inspiring students to serve the Lord and others. The legacy continues with us.

Not a Bad View

It’s hard to imagine that when Linfield purchased this property in the 1970’s, Temecula was in the middle of nowhere, a tiny town situated amidst miles of sprawling hills and empty ranch fields. Today it is, of course, a lovely and rather busy suburban community, but driving onto Linfield’s beautiful property is much like stepping back into a peaceful oasis. The school’s 100 acres are divided into three campuses and even feature a large pond filled with ducks and other wildlife. On any given day you might find students studying together under umbrellas, enjoying a picnic lunch with a teacher by the pond, climbing the hill to pray at the steel beam cross, collecting samples to study in science class, or simply enjoying a walk in the California sunshine. If you’re lucky, you might even see some of the baby ducks or geese as they float along. It is, quite simply, not a bad place to spend the day.

A Worthy Mission

Linfield is a college-preparatory school, and we want students to enjoy our vibrant community and be successful academically throughout their educational journey, but the end goal is not a high school diploma or a college acceptance letter. It actually goes far beyond Linfield. Our school’s mission, its very reason for existence, is to develop, prepare, and equip students in order that they may serve the Lord and the world through their character and leadership, and we are blessed to see Linfield graduates living out this worthy mission. They are serving their families, their professions, and their communities as doctors, teachers, writers, missionaries, paramedics, electricians, business leaders, filmmakers, stay at home moms, lawyers, artists, pastors, and coaches.

Part of the Flock

Linfield is home to a thriving ecosystem of plants, fish, birds, and other wildlife, and you can typically track the seasons by observing which kinds of birds have recently migrated to the property. But there are also some permanent residents who are just part of the family. These ducks simply showed up a few years back and have remained on campus ever since. They enjoy floating lazily in the pond and taking naps in the shade, and their favorite time of day is high school lunch because they get to visit their beloved students (and eat the scraps). Sometimes they miss the students so much that they even try to waddle into the high school building to say hi. They might be little ducks, but they’re also some of our favorite Lions.

Always a Lion

Most Likely to Come Back and Work at Your School: To some high school seniors, such a nomination might seem like the nightmare scenario, one to be avoided at all costs, but it speaks to the distinctive culture and special bonds within our community that at Linfield, this is not the case. In fact, we consistently have quite a few Linfield alumni employed by their alma mater! As Lions, they grew in knowledge, faith, and maturity, enjoyed many of the beloved traditions that still exist today, and even learned from some of the same teachers. Now they bring a unique perspective into the ways in which they teach, serve, and speak truth into the lives of our students.
