Why Linfield?

Artistic Possibility

Why Linfield?

Because we believe creativity is a gift, and we seek to foster an environment of artistic possibility with opportunities in music, theater, visual arts, and media.

What sets Linfield Fine Arts apart? Here are just a few examples.

All the World's a Stage

Football players dancing across the stage in bow ties, calculus scholars belting out the notes of a show-stopping tune, class presidents shifting props into position...Linfield’s annual spring musical isn’t just for Theater kids; it is nothing short of a school-wide event. In fact, traditionally, over a 1/3 of the student body participates in this presentation of a Broadway-style show every year!  Whether they're starring in the lead role, dancing in an ensemble, painting the set, playing in the orchestra, or working backstage, our students sacrifice hours upon hours of their time to bring the show to life, their effort reflective of a culture in which the arts are embraced and celebrated by students, faculty, and parents alike.

Hitting the Right Notes

Many studies have shown that children who are exposed to music and play instruments are more likely to do better academically and have higher IQ's than their classmates, but because of budget cuts and limited resources, few schools are able to offer musical enrichments in elementary school anymore.  At Linfield, however, not only do 3rd-5th grade students have the opportunity to receive semi-private lessons and attend group rehearsals, they also perform together as an Elementary School Band for school and community events and are adjudicated at the annual ACSI band festival. Instead of simply tinkering with their brass and wind instruments, they actually learn how to play effectively as a unit, something that aids in their development and lays the foundation for future participation in our talented MS & HS Bands.

Lights, Camera, Action

In a world dominated by apps like Instagram, Snapchat, and Youtube, most students are natural media producers, easily creating amazing videos, photos, and presentations with the click of a few buttons. But since we might also have the next Steven Spielberg or Christopher Nolan in our midst, we also offer high school students an opportunity to take their cinematic vision to the next level in our UC approved film courses, teaching them specialized production skills and letting them explore their creative talents. Linfield’s budding filmmakers have access to a variety of state of the art equipment (Blackmagic cameras, gimbals, a green screen room, a Mac lab with editing bays, etc.) as they work collaboratively with their peers to create, write, direct, produce, and edit at least 3-4 short films each year. They also submit their work to 15 film festivals!

Express Yourself

Few people can resist the pull of a blank canvas. Whether we are artistically gifted or not, there is something inside us, something intrinsically human, that longs to doodle, draw, paint, sculpt, photograph, and design. This creativity is a gift, a reflection of the creative God who made us, and with that knowledge, we seek to foster an environment of artistic possibility, one that inspires students and gives them an outlet for self-expression. To that end, our middle & high school art classes introduce the elements of art and the principles of design; students then have the freedom and opportunity to use a wide variety of media, tools, and artistic styles to create their own original works, developing extensive portfolios throughout the year. Elementary students explore their creativity through monthly art appreciation classes, studying famous artists and then replicating their paintings (of flowers, animals, landscapes, etc.) as they work with charcoal, paints, chalk pastels, and a variety of other mediums. As our artists grow and pursue their passions, we celebrate them and proudly display their masterpieces across campus!

It's Never Too Late to Join the Band

Whether you’ve been playing an instrument your whole life or you just picked one up yesterday, we believe it’s never too late to join the band! Linfield students of all ages and backgrounds are invited to gain experience and sharpen performance skills through participation in a variety of instrumental ensembles. As they learn how to play their instruments individually and collectively, band members learn responsibility, build their confidence, and work together as invaluable members of a team to create something of beauty and worth. In addition, not only do the elementary, middle, and high school bands perform annually at Linfield events and concerts, they also compete at festivals and go on tour each spring!
